What happened?  Here is the joint statement released on Tuesday of last week: 
“The University of Chicago and the Yerkes Future Foundation (YFF) are pleased to announce an agreement in principle for the transfer of ownership of Yerkes Observatory and related property located in Williams Bay, Wisconsin to the Yerkes Future Foundation. Over the next several months, both organizations will be working closely on all aspects of the proposed transfer.

The Yerkes Observatory is now officially closed.  It went down on Monday, October 1, 2018, as was advertised. Now what? Are there any new plans for Yerkes’ future? The talk around the lake is about some form of development getting ready to take place on the observatory property, with Mike Keefe being the motive force behind it.

“Save the Yerkes” is a phrase invented to unite a small collection of groups and as many citizens as possible to “save” the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay from extinction and even potential destruction. There is no question that, following the first attempt to shed itself of the Yerkes nearly ten years ago, the University of Chicago is still trying to sell it off and be rid of it.
