OUR PLACE

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer.
The Riviera Beach is ready for summer. Swim piers are in. Kiosks will be available for purchasing beach passes. Lifeguards will be on duty. The summer season has begun. As always, Memorial Day weekend will be extremely busy, and Lake Geneva will be full of excitement. The shops, restaurants, and hotels will be ready. Memorial Day will include the traditional Memorial Day Parade at 10 a.m. The Memorial Day parade will start in front of Horticultural Hall and go through downtown, ending at Lake Geneva’s Ceremonial Flag and Memorial Day Ceremony in Flat Iron Park. Let’s not forget the importance of Memorial Day and take a moment to honor and remember the service members who died in active military service for us.

We don’t know them all, but we owe them all. Memorial Day is more than just an extra-long weekend and extra day off work. Memorial Day originated after the Civil War to honor fallen Union soldiers. Originally called “Decoration Day,” it began with communities decorating graves with spring flowers. In 1971, Congress established it as a federal holiday on the last Monday of May.
