SURPRISING STUFF

The bathrooms at the Riviera Pier Complex are locked.
What’s going on?  Part of the reason that so much money was spent on plumbing and new bathroom arrangements and fixtures, hundreds of thousands of dollars, was to have bathroom availability inside that building at all hours of the day and night.  The complex was especially structured to make sure those bathrooms were divided and secured off from the rest of the building, plus the lobby and outside areas were to be put fully under 24/7 video surveillance.

This last weekend, and the one before, the bathrooms were locked.  The city front desk indicated that this was because the department of public works had made a decision to have the bathrooms open only from Mondays through Thursdays from nine in the morning until three in the afternoon.  The reason given for this change was that nobody was in the building to protect it at other times.  The mayor was called.  She’s looking into it.

What’s going on in this city that seems to have forgotten that it has given its word and that its word has to be worth something, not to mention the money it took to be spent in allowing for the city’s word to be made good.  The real story, as described by Tom Earle, the head of public works, is personnel.  The bathrooms were always intended to be closed late at night and then unlocked in the early morning hours.  The city council has not yet found two people to work at the Riviera and make sure the bathrooms are clean and open at proper times.
