LIVING HERE

Roof replacements are a thing in the city this year.
Three of the Lake Geneva city building roofs were well overdue for new roofs. The city hall roof is the first one done and has been since late summer. The cost of the city hall’s new roof was around $82,000.00 and was completed by Top Roofing out of Wheaton Illinois. The other two roofs still waiting to be done are on Carey Street and are both part of the DPW (department of public works). Midwest Roofing, out of Dodgeville Wisconsin is the top contender for the roof replacements on Carey Street. The roof at 1055 Carey Street is not to exceed $49,8000.00 and the one at 1065 Carey Street is not to exceed $99,320.00. The city is getting much-needed work done and preventing future work from needing to be done by replacing the roofs now. These roof projects, along with the recent roof replacement of the Riviera, have cost the city a bundle but may have saved the city much bigger bundles in the future.

Construction on Lake Geneva’s ice castle has officially begun.
The castle, located in Geneva National, has opened up priority vouchers for those wanting to purchase tickets early to make sure they can reserve a spot before tickets sell out. Freezing temperatures this last week have allowed ‘ice artisans’ to begin growing and harvesting icicles to create the magical winter wonderland. Every day the ice artisans will harvest and hand-placed ten thousand icicles. Workers will spend thousands of hours working in the cold, and sometimes below freezing temperatures, while hand-carving and shaping each individual icicle. There’s even plumbing inside the castle that leads to a series of sprinklers that are responsible for helping shape the castle and keeping it looking new throughout the season. The castle will also be bigger this year, thanks to the Geneva National team that worked during the off-season to level out the slope on which the ice castle is located. The goal is to have the ice castle open by mid-January, but that is, of course, weather-dependent. The frozen playground will include towers, tunnels, slides, caverns, fountains, color-changing led lights, and more. New this season will be horse-drawn sleigh rides down an illuminated winter path thanks to the larger area now available for the festivities.  The week of this paper’s delivery is expected to have temperatures rising to the mid-sixties.  If that occurs then the ice castle could be thrown into a weather-related delay in timing for its opening.
