The Duke of Earl gets a new secretary, doesn’t have to get in trouble for plowing snow this season, and his little Christmas trees in wooden pots are doing fine.
Controversy follows Tom Earle wherever he goes and at whatever he does in Lake Geneva, but then, he’s the only ‘Street King’ the city has.  His secretary is the wife of the city’s parking czar, which caused some to complain that nepotism was involved in the selection process.  But then, the woman was deputy city clerk for Lake Geneva once (serving admirably) and then worked at VISIT for a successful run too.  Imminently qualified, and it’s not a situation like the one that existed when Alderperson Flower, (leaving office) served in a superior position over her husband, the city inspector.  Nobody liked that seeming violation of the city’s nepotism rule (yes, the city actually has one of those), but then the guy is a good guy and served without seeming complications and a good measure of competence.

It’s finally the time of year when Gary Con rolls around!
Now, what is Gary Con, really? GaryCon is a gaming convention held in Lake Geneva every year to honor the legacy of the legendary game designer named Gary Gygax, who is renowned for creating the tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. He created the company called TSR (Tactical Studies Rules) in 1973, through which he also created numerous other tabletop games, such as Fight in the Skies, a war game featuring World War One era aerial dogfighting, Boot Hill, the tabletop role-playing game set in the Wild West, and The Awful Green Things from Outer Space, a cartoonish board game about fighting aliens off of a spaceship.

At Gary Con there is a myriad of booths featuring different products and tables running all sorts of tabletop games. The event runs from March 24th through the 27th and is held at the Grand Geneva. There will also be a booth for Griffin and Gargoyle, a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired tavern that’s slated to open in a couple of years on the very edge of Lake Geneva. That place will include a dining area, a steampunk-inspired bar, ax throwing, and more.

In visiting Lake Geneva, visitors should also stop by the Dungeon Hobby Shop Museum, a museum set up in the original headquarters of TSR Games from back in the ’70s. The employees, guides, and game-players do in-house tours of the displays and walk everyone through the company’s history, while also going into some detail about the games. The place also features a gift shop at the front of the building, with tons of neat knickknacks and merchandise. Whether you’re a gaming enthusiast or potentially interested in the hobby it’s a must-see …and play.
