LITTLE  GEMS

We quietly come back to the secret and never-to-be-discussed tunnel system that runs under the streets of Lake Geneva.
Ten years ago, the Geneva Shore Report ran an article about the tunnel system that was built under the city, back in the time when many speakeasies operated up and down Wrigley, Broad, and Main Streets (during prohibition, from 1919 through 1933).  How much of that system is left, open, and allowing for any kind of travel through it, or the movement of supplies?   Nobody occupying the spaces where the tunnels are built will discuss whether those tunnels are gone or open and operational for the movement of people and stuff today.

The tunnel complex started at the old Frank Lloyd Wright hotel that was replaced years back by the Geneva Towers.  The tunnel ran and still runs, all the way up to where Hogs and Kisses currently sit on Broad Street.  That place was formerly known as the Annex where a boarded window upstairs existed for illegal off-track betting on horseraces.  From there the tunnel runs under Kilwins (now, supposedly, boarded up there).  It ran up Broad Street on the easter side all the way to where Town Bank is located.  On the other side of Broad, the tunnel runs under Speedo’s Harborside Grill up to Main Street (or just short of it).  What to make of all this semi-secret underground stuff?  Just really interesting, really, as nothing much goes on down there these days.

Social meeting has become an effective tool for all service departments of almost everyone.
It’s been an effective way to stay connected with the community the departments proudly serve and allows the community to help the departments serve its community. Recently the Town of Linn police department had a case that a social meeting helped solve. The newly appointed Chief, Jonathon Albreck, shared the story of the missing ice fishing equipment. The complaint called in, regarding some missing ice fishing equipment out on the lake, from a Linn resident. The owner of the ice fishing gear had left some equipment out on the lake as he regularly did and kept an eye on it with a camera directed in the area.

The equipment included a ‘Snow Dog,’ which is a tracked mini tractor. The machine is pure utility and a luxury tool for hauling ice fishing gear, so when the machine went missing the owner was very disappointed. Detective Borgan lead an investigation which included posting on social media looking for any information or sightings of the peculiar and rare machine. With only two snow dogs being sold in the state the chances of one being seen was a long shot but if it was there was a 50/50 chance it was the one.

Sure enough, Deputy McMillan, with the sheriff’s department reported seeing a Snow Dog out on Powers Lake. Before Deputy McMillan could make contact with the person of interest, however, the person, having seen his machine on Facebook, called the department to return the fishing equipment. That person, who is not named here, indicated that he had taken the equipment that had been left out on the ice in bad weather to protect it. The equipment was returned to the complainant. Once again, because of the power of social media, the community, and wonderful people who make up local service department personnel, another mystery was solved and all turned out well.

Evergreen Country Club in Elkhorn has been sold to a Chicago-area businessman.
After twenty years of ownership, the group of four current owners decided it was time to sell the property and move on. The buyer, Nehang Anand, has partial ownership in other golf clubs and resorts throughout Wisconsin, now adding Evergreen to that list, meeting the asking price of 3.2 million dollars. The sale closed on March 8th, and this is the first golf club that Nehang will be the sole owner of (and not a part-owner).

Evergreen’s 27-hole golf course is known for being open as soon as the weather allows, and when other courses are not. Many golfers also enjoy the fact that it is close to some high-end courses as well as close to Lake Geneva and other popular tourist areas. Evergreen also boasts a large banquet hall, catering service, and pub that are open for food, drinks, and music while in season. Hopefully, this will be Evergreen’s best year ever.
