THE BRIGHT SIDE

The miserable road crew ‘working’ on Highway 50 just west of Lake Geneva.
What a collection of dunces…or is it really that way?  This company doing the work gets the multi-million-dollar contract to lay asphalt over cracked road foundations and then puts up cones and scrapes a part of the upper layer of the previous asphalt mess it laid four years earlier (over the same cracked foundations).  What’s better than that?  The workers lay the cones down, do a spotting of work, and then disappear, except for an occasional empty piece of heavy equipment left lying around.

Where are they and what are they doing?  Other jobbers, like plumbers, electrical and HVAC people do this on a very common basis. They get the job and then leave it lay there, because they are wired in, to do the real work on other jobs they have.  Simultaneous booking is common today.  All these operations want an advance, supposedly to buy materials, but in reality…to wire the client down to the job.

When you drive Highway 50 west of Lake Geneva you can feel a bit of relaxed comfort in at least knowing what’s really going on, not that you can do anything about it.  The state, county, and even local governments are all aboard with this kind of legalized theft of taxpayer money.  That might be cold comfort, in knowing what’s going on, but what the hell, it’s really hot out there this summer.

The Wisconsin State Fair starts Thursday, August 4th, and goes through Sunday, August 14th.
The first Wisconsin State Fair was held in Janesville along the banks of the Rock River in 1851. In the following years, the state fair traveled to different cities each year until it found its home at its current location in West Allis in 1892. This year the fair will celebrate 171 years of tradition, including the original cream puff, and it will welcome over one million visitors.

The Milk House is back this year with a variety of favorite flavors available for one dollar a cup. Visitors will be able to explore and enjoy agriculture, exhibits, entertainment, food, beverages, games, rides, attractions, shopping, and much more. There are over eighty new foods to try this year, including the arctic bug blast, nacho fiesta burger, chili cheeseburger, colossal onion, and clam chowder fries.

The main stage will host big names including; Jeff Dunham, Nelly, Toby Keith, Charlie Berens, and more. The main stage is a ticketed event but there are many side stages throughout the grounds with free entertainment. This is a great family-friendly event and no matter what your favorite activities are there is something for everyone to love at the Wisconsin State Fair.  The next big fair coming to Southern Wisconsin is the Walworth County Fair, to be held later in August.

Tickets for both fairs are set at $17.00 per day ($50.00 for the whole fair).  Seniors and vets are twelve bucks with kids coming in at five bucks unless under age six.  Oh, the Walworth County Fair, if a ticket is bought online is only ten bucks, good for one day. Parking is free. VIP parking is $50.00 a day.
