OUR PLACE
There was some good news that came out of the Monday night city council meeting.
The Jaycees, who work pretty tirelessly to put on charitable events in the city, were hit with a potential $25,000 fee to get a license for proceeding with the 2023 Venetian Fest (the Jaycees 61st celebration). The fee was part of the new parking package, as in all previous years the Jaycees were allowed free parking all around Flat Iron Park during the event. The council unanimously waived the fee, after trying to convince the Jaycees to go get the money from Visit Lake Geneva. That didn’t work, so the council members (even the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, well, one woman) voted for waiving the fee.
Right after that the council did the same for the Art in the Park people. That non-profit runs the really neat Art in the Park event every year in Lake Geneva, and their spokesperson talked about just how tiny the budget is that they have to put the thing on with. They operate much like the Venetian Fest, in that much of the work is done by volunteers. Keeping the parking rates was a bad decision, but not these last two.
The gambling in Lake Geneva continues unabated and without interruption.
Although invited to attend the Tavern Owners Association meeting last week, the staff of the Geneva Shore Report declined. What that association has to do with gambling, the only reason the GSR would ever have been put on the agenda, is letting us, and now you, know that the gambling is really going on. There would have been no other reason in the world to invite the GSR to the gathering, or firing squad, or whatever.
The taverns in Lake Geneva cannot be damaged if there’s no gambling going on, only if it’s going on and they either don’t want it known or, more likely, don’t want to cut it out. The GSR is not here to get rid of gambling, or any other vice for that matter. The GSR is merely here to point the playing out, as well as the risks, the illegality and great potential for financial loss. Gambling establishment owners and operators never gamble. They collect. We have no wonder why that is.
