My time as an alderperson in the City of Lake Geneva has been a wonderful time of learning. Much of that learning has come from you, the citizens. Formerly I was a journalist for more than 40 years and covered city councils in five different communities. As a journalist I was taught how to be as objective as possible and see all sides. When I was general manager of two newspapers, I was responsible for budget and personnel decisions just as I have been working in Lake Geneva’s city government. That experience has proven so valuable. I listen, and I’m willing to admit when I’m wrong. For instance, I initially voted for the 10-foot bike path on South Street, but then listened to residents who pointed out that it would be a detriment to the neighborhood, and I changed my mind. As chairperson of the Public Works Committee, I provided a forum for residents to voice their concerns. After all was said and done, I voted against the path, as did a majority of the council.
I take this representative job very seriously, and often come home pondering whether or not I’ve made the right decisions and expressed myself effectively, which I believe is a large part of my obligation to the voters. I supported the purchase of the former Hillmoor Golf Course because it’s visionary and it’ll be the best thing, in the long run, for the future of Lake Geneva. It may take a while to develop this wonderful property, but future generations will thank us. I was against $4 an-hour parking rates for the weekend, feeling there were other ways to help balance the budget. In the interest of compromise, I suggested a $3 rate instead, which unfortunately didn’t get anywhere. I love this vitally important job. I love making the tough decisions. And I love Lake Geneva which has been my home for the last 14 year.
I’d appreciate your vote April 4.
Sincerely, John Halverson, alderperson, Lake Geneva
