OUR PLACE

Fourth of July weekend is upon us.
The night before, and the day of traditional celebrations and plenty of small-town American charm, falls on Tuesday of next week. On Friday, June 30th, Elkhorn will host its Star-Spangled Celebration at Sunset Park, and this will include food vendors, live music, and fireworks at dusk. Saturday July 1st the town of Delevan will have fireworks in the Delavan Lake Community Park. Be aware that this venue has a non-resident fee, adults $3 and children $2.

Tuesday July 4th Delavan has a free firework show in Congdon Gardens. Fontana has its firework show on the fourth starting at dusk, ideal viewing is from the beach or by boat. Lake Como is another option for great fireworks; however, this show is not open to the public but there are plenty of great views of the show on the south shore of Lake Como.

Lake Geneva Country Club has a privately sponsored firework show at dusk but is strictly for members only. Many boaters enjoy the show from the lakes east end.  The City of Lake Geneva does not have its own firework show but the Grand Geneva does have a wonderful show on the Fourth of July. This show is meant for resort guests and those with restaurant or picnic reservations. Locals are familiar with this and have found a great viewing spots at the Geneva Square Shopping Center parking lot and at Veterans Park. The fourth of July is a great celebration in the area and along with the fireworks the weekend includes so many cookouts with family and friends highlighting America.

Why is there no fireworks show on the edge of the shores of the City of Lake Geneva for the 4th of July?
The city announced recently that the revenue brought in during the whole of last year resulted in a seven-million-dollar surplus.  How is it that the nation’s most patriotic holiday isn’t celebrated by Lake Geneva.  The other communities around manage to put on modest but nice fireworks displays but not the main ‘anchor’ community at the north end of the lake.  Why is that kind of leadership and lack of attention being tolerated by the people who live and work in the city.  It’s high time that these citizens begin getting answers from the men and women currently serving in both elected and appointed positions about these issues.

Nothing can stay the way it is for a very long period of time so change is inevitable, but it can be positive change while constantly making improvements, but this won’t happen without an aware, thinking, and acting public.  There’s an election coming next April and it’s time to start to get ready to get ready to serve or find those to serve who want real progress, not goats in the park or a confetti roof on the Riviera.
