LITTLE GEMS
Hydrant clearing is important.
Lake Geneva is lucky to have great service departments which include the LG Fire Department. The department responds to over two thousand calls a year and the number continues to rise. Many of these calls come in the winter months which can be a lot more challenging as frigid temperatures, layers of snow falls, and ice add to the risk firefighters already face. Extreme temperatures are hard on the equipment and the personnel. So many factors play a role in the swiftness of calls and emergencies being resolved.
Hydrant access is a big concern when a fire happens. Last week the Anchor Covenant Church endured a fire which the department along with many other departments responded to had all of these factors piled up against them. The over a foot of snow blocked hydrants and quick access, the well below freezing temps made the fight extra hard, and the heavy ice made things move slower and more dangerous. The fire was put out and all are safe, however, the church has much damage to deal with. Lake Geneva residents are lucky to have such great people serving the community and can and should help in the efforts.
Sidewalks need to be shoveled and hydrants must be accessible.
