SURPRISING STUFF

Friday fish fry is very popular in this area and all of Wisconsin.
During Lent, it is enjoyed even more. Lent is a period before the Christian feast of Easter. Practicing Christians observe this time commemorating the forty days Jesus Christ spent fasting and enduring temptation. Even if you did not grow up in a religious household most people have heard of Lent and have heard talk of what people are giving up for Lent. Lent is the time between Ash Wednesday and the Thursday before Good Friday.

On the Fridays of Lent, everyone abstains from consuming meat. This is where Friday Fish Fry becomes a bigger deal. Locally we have some of the best fish fry’s. Almost every restaurant has some kind of fish fry but there are some local favorites. Mars Restaurant located on South Shore Drive on Lake Como serves a traditional uncomplicated fish fry with a variety of fish options like cod, walleye, perch, and bluegill. DJ’s in the Drink on Lakeshore Drive on Lake Como is another favorite. DJ’s serves a great beer-battered fried or baked cod fish fry with some great hush puppies or potato pancakes. Pier 290 on Leichty Drive in Williams Bay is a little bit more in cost but well worth it. There are so many more and all very delicious.

The main problem older people are experiencing in going to fish fry eatouts is the fish.  Once served mostly in supper clubs and benefits, they are now all over.  The fish, for the older generation, must be perch, walleye, bluegill, or crappie.  Not cod.  The other species of fish are all freshwater, as raised and caught in the Great Lakes, while Cod is an ocean fish caught off the East Coast.  No, it’s not the same.  Some customers don’t care but the lowering of attendance at fish fry service on Fridays has dropped significantly over the years. It’s the fish.

Regionally, only Mars Restaurant gets it right.
