LIVING HERE

Thursday night’s Special Piers, Harbor, & Lakefront meeting was canceled.
This meeting was to be all about the lagoon, its funding of it, the maintenance need and urgency on dredging, the recommendation of the committee regarding the redesign and installation of the pier system, and a timeline on what and when is going to be done. Bruceski’s Marine was awarded the job of pier removal in the lagoon.

Last week, bright and early last Tuesday Bruceski’s had a crew at the lagoon to get the job done. The process was executed with great skill as the barge was lifted by crane into the lagoon and even with bad weather the team got the job done in just two days. Now that Bruceski’s has removed the dilapidated unsafe piers and slips from the lagoon the next step if any needs to be decided.

The three bids received ranged from approximately $179,000 up to $309,000. The city does not profit from the lagoon slip rentals, in fact, it barely and in some years does not cover the cost of the slips and the maintenance they require. That is a major reason the lagoon looks the way it has for many years. The slips and piers are well over fifty years old, and dredging and debris removal does not happen as often as it should, leaving the lagoon looking very unkempt and unsafe.

The next Piers, Harbor, and Lakefront meeting will be on Tuesday, April 9th at 5 p.m. The lagoon slip renters were made aware of the possible improvements and the possible delay this season, but without a commitment and plan how delayed will this season be?
