DMV fraud across the state.
Authorities in Walworth County are urging residents to be cautious after a new wave of fraudulent messages falsely claiming to be from the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles resurfaced this week. The scammers are texting and pretending to be from WisDOT DMV to get people to click on fraudulent links or provide personal information.
Scammers are sending emails and text messages warning of a “final notice” or an “unpaid traffic violation” to trick recipients into clicking a link and paying a fake fine. Officials emphasize that the Wisconsin DMV does not contact individuals via text or email to demand payment or threaten penalties. The message, which often includes a bogus violation notice and payment instructions, is a phishing attempt designed to steal personal and financial information. Law enforcement warns that clicking the link or entering any details could compromise sensitive data. Delete the message. Do not reply or click any of the links in the message.
If you are a victim of this scam, WisDOT DMV suggests you take the following steps: Consider filing a police report with the local law enforcement agency where you reside. Report it to the Federal Trade Commission. Speak to AARP’s Fraud Watch Helpline. Request a free credit report and research identity theft prevention at https://www.annualcreditreport.com/index.action.
The Lake Geneva Badgers.
For the first time in history, Badger High School’s baseball team is headed to the WIAA state tournament, a remarkable achievement for a program that won just three games four years ago. Their hard work has paid off, and it shows. This moment has been a work in progress since last season when they came up just one game short. After suffering a one-run loss in last year’s sectional final, the team returned this season with a vengeance, dominating their bracket despite being seeded fourth. The Badgers enter the state tournament as an underdog, seeded eighth. The team won on Monday and advanced to the semifinals with a 14-3 win over Hudson. Badger’s Riley Lussmyer is relieved with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, giving way to Gavin Stewart after surrendering a two-out double. Stewart closes it out with a pop-up to shortstop. Lussmyer gets the win, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four in four and two-thirds. Leading hitters for Badger were Matthew O’Grady (2-for-3, three runs scored, one RBI) and Ryan McCarthy (3-for-4, one run scored, two RBIs) amidst a 13-hit effort for the team.
