LIVING HERE

The Police Lights of Christmas.
The police will be at Culver’s on Tuesday, July 29th, in Lake Geneva. Join the City of Lake Geneva Police Department at Culver’s on Tuesday, July 29, as we help raise money for Police Lights of Christmas! They will be there during lunch (approximately 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and dinner (approximately 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.). Stop by, say hello, and help support a great cause. All funds raised will be used to purchase gift cards for officers to carry in their squads, ready to help neighbors in need during the holiday season.

Whether it’s a family going through a tough time or someone who just needs a little extra support, these small acts of kindness can make a big impact. This statewide initiative has helped thousands of people across Wisconsin, and they are proud to be part of it.

Have you seen more fireflies this year?
You must have noticed it by now. Fireflies are back in southeast Wisconsin. It’s been reported in previous years that fireflies have been in decline, with many species nearing endangerment. But suddenly, this summer, they’re twinkling all over our area. The world turns slowly for fireflies, so Bryant says the reason for the perceived reemergence has a lot to do with the weather. Both this summer and last summer. Scientists say the insects’ biggest threats are habitat loss, pesticide use, and light pollution. Entomology professor Dan Young said this year marks a short-term win for the regional firefly population.

The area is coming out of a drought, leaving abundant ground moisture for fireflies to thrive in during their larval and pupa stages. The flashes you see outside are part of their mating ritual. The most common species in Wisconsin, known colloquially as the ‘Big Dippers’ for the dropping motion they exhibit when lit, are most active from dusk to about 10 p.m. Fireflies are in decline overall.

There are some things we can do. Leave some mess in your yard. Leave a corner that’s got taller weeds. Leave some leaves in a pile in the fall.  If you’re out enjoying the patio, please turn off all your lights when you go in. They don’t need to be on all night. Then you’ll do a favor to the moths and the fireflies. It’s not quite 10 million fireflies, but at least it seems to be a lot more than last year.
