THE BRIGHT SIDE

A child was taken into custody on Friday, Sept. 19.
The youth was taken into custody for allegedly stealing a firearm from a parent’s locked bedroom, according to the Elkhorn Police Department. This was not related to an incident that took place at school or on school grounds. Early Friday evening, officers were dispatched to a residence for a report of a stolen firearm. The caller believed their child forced entry into their locked bedroom and stole the firearm earlier in the day.

Officers investigated, and the child was subsequently taken into custody that evening and held in secure detention. Further investigation resulted in locating the stolen firearm. The child will be referred to juvenile authorities for armed burglary, theft of a firearm, possession of a dangerous weapon by a person under 18, and obstructing an officer. Elkhorn school officials later notified police that other students were aware of the stolen firearm and the arrest. Police said social media posts circulated claiming the child intended to bring the gun to school, but investigators say they have no credible evidence of such a threat at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
