Full payments from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will not be distributed until the government reopens.
President Donald Trump related this on Tuesday in a post on Truth Social. The announcement came just a day after the administration said it would partially fund the program following orders from two federal judges. SNAP, also known as EBT and food stamps, is a federal program providing low-income Americans with funds to purchase groceries, loaded onto an electronic card each month. SNAP, which supports roughly 42 million Americans, faces major disruptions amid an ongoing federal government shutdown.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees SNAP, had planned to freeze payments starting Nov. 1 because it said it could no longer keep funding it during the federal government shutdown. The administration cited legal advice and operational constraints in determining that only 50 percent of the usual monthly benefits could be distributed to eligible households. Millions of Americans face uncertainty regarding the amount and timing of aid, with state agencies likely to require weeks to process and disburse benefits. Legal challenges from Democratic state attorneys general and advocacy organizations could result in further court orders or new guidance.
