LIVING HERE

We’ve had a dry season, and fires can escalate very quickly.
If you choose to burn, do so in a small pile far from structures on a calm, humid day, with water and a shovel ready, and never use accelerants like gasoline. Avoid windy conditions, as they spread embers easily and can cause a fire to escape containment. Clear a 10- to 25-foot perimeter around the pile down to bare earth. Ensure the pile is at least 50 feet from any structures, trees, or other flammable materials. Only burn small piles at a time and add to the pile gradually as it burns down. A 4×4-foot pile is a common guideline.  Start the fire with a long match or lighter. Never use gasoline or other accelerants, as they can cause flare-ups.

An adult must supervise the fire at all times until it is completely out. Keep a water hose, shovel, and/or rake nearby in case the fire starts to spread. If the fire gets out of control, leave immediately and call the fire department. Always check local regulations first, as many areas prohibit leaf burning, and have a plan to extinguish the fire completely when finished.
