LIVING HERE
Highway 50 construction updates.
The upcoming project covers 2.47 miles and involves pavement replacement, fresh ADA-compliant curb ramps, upgraded traffic signals at six intersections, and extensive water main and sewer replacement. Because of the massive impact on downtown traffic and summer tourism, local officials are actively mapping out communication plans and hosting workshops. The city, VISIT Lake Geneva, and Downtown Lake Geneva are hosting at least three additional public information meetings in 2026. Each meeting will run from 6-7 p.m. and be held at Lake Geneva City Hall. The PIMs are scheduled for Wednesday, June 10th, Wednesday, Sept. 16th, and Wednesday, Dec. 9th. All interested citizens are encouraged to attend.
The town of Sugar Creek is the second municipality in six months to end services with the Elkhorn Area Fire Department.
The Town of Sugar Creek has provided notice to the City of Elkhorn that it will not renew or continue the fire department service agreement. This notice of termination does not mean Sugar Creek will stop receiving emergency services right away. They’re still locked in the contract for another three years, unless the municipalities agree to new terms. The EAFD is a full-time fire department funded by taxpayers in the City of Elkhorn and the towns of LaFayette, Sugar Creek, and Geneva.
In December 2025, the town of LaFayette provided notice that it would be ending its agreement for fire services in Elkhorn. Sugar Creek residents paid taxes to Elkhorn for increased fire and emergency services. The Town of Sugar Creek wants to leave that agreement, and some taxpayers are wondering how their money was spent. Rightfully, they should be told exactly what was done with their money. Taxes keep going up, but service hasn’t changed. The Town of Sugar Creek and City of Elkhorn need to do what’s right, and that is to be transparent, come to an agreement, and risk everyone’s safety.
