HOLDING ON TIGHT
Is the City of Lake Geneva paying attention to the national and international situation enough to basically stop in place? To not indicate but through action communicate that nobody has anything coming until there is some resolution to the multiplicity of economic and now violent actions occurring at home and out in the world. While the National Guard is still occupying L.A. and the United States Marines are on the ground with them, the country has gone to war. No war was declared, and no war is declared now, but against the law and the advice of the intelligence gathering services, the executive leading the country has led it straight into a war with Iran. The reasons for the war are supposedly defensive, which is the new case for going to war.
That’s called committing terminal violence ‘preemptively,’ or because you are afraid. Also, there is discussion about sending the guard and the Marines to other cities to manage the lack of violence occurring there, while seeming to want to provoke exactly that.
Is the City of Lake Geneva leadership thinking deeply enough to have decided to crawl into a foxhole for a while until some of this tariff, bombing, militarization of the major cities, and even the cancellation of many federal and state services begin to work through? The war can take any turn, of course, as that’s what happens in wars. Countries, regions, cultures, and even religions come together, and whatever conflict started as can quickly become a devastating and killing set of vast fields of fire.
The city administrator has gone to ground in that he does not take visits, answer calls, or call back, at least not to the media. Todd Krause remains ever available, but his job is mostly adversarial in that he works inside a ‘weak mayor’ system where the administrator is the powerful force in most operations affecting the city. Parking, the beach, traffic signals, and even the whole department of public works fall under his authority…if he’s there. Todd cannot make the piers and harbors guy change the bracelet system.
The GSR is sponsoring a referendum, and that referendum will be for the residents to decide if they want to get rid of any charges for use of the beach.
Now, read this descriptive comment about our country today: There is no art in this White House. There is no literature, no poetry, no music. There are no pets in this White House. No loyal man’s best friend. No socks, the family cat. No kids’ science fairs. No time when the President takes off his blue suit, red tie uniform, and becomes human. Except when he puts on his white shirt and khaki pants uniform and hides from the American people to play golf. There are no images of the first family enjoying themselves together in a moment of relaxation.
No Obamas on the beach in Hawaii moments, or Bushes fishing in Kennebunkport. No Reagans on horseback. No, Kennedy’s playing touch football on the Cape. Where’d that country go? Where did all the fun, the joy, and the expression of love go? We used to be the country that did the ice bucket challenge and raised millions for charity. We used to have a President who calmed and soothed the nation instead of dividing it, and a first lady who planted a garden instead of ripping one out. We are rudderless and joyless. We have lost the cultural aspects of society that make America great. We have lost our Mojo, our fun, our happiness, our cheering on of others, the shared experience of humanity that makes it all worth it.
The challenges and the triumphs that we shared and celebrated. The unique can-do spirit that America has always been known for. We are lost. We’ve lost so much in so short a time. It’s up to every American to fight to bring the spirit of America back, and that includes the entire population of Lake Geneva.
