THE VAST UNKNOWN

What’s going to happen now?  The stock market is in freefall, with losses far exceeding gains, but being made to look like just minor ‘corrections’ in a marketplace that doesn’t see things as massive losses and marginal gains as anything but potentially disastrous. What can be made from an analysis of the current situation?

In Lake Geneva and the surrounding lake communities, there has to be a sense of fear and also a sense of hope that sanity will be regained and the world order everyone so depends on without knowing they are depending on it, will return to a semblance of sanity. Many people were convinced that the democrats were communists, run by a demented leader, but the truth was in the results. Nobody was truly worried about America going to war with its best friends to take over their countries. Nobody was worried that prices would increase for common goods by twenty to over a hundred percent. Nobody was worried about how chains like Walmart would have to close many of their stores, and worse.

What can local businesses do when they cannot possibly absorb the additional charges of tariffs that will add gross amounts to their product prices that most normal customers will simply not pay…or possibly even believe. They can start indicating on receipts that the additional price of between twenty percent, the minimum tariffs being charged, and a hundred and forty-five percent, the maximum, are just that…tariffs being charged by this leadership of the United States Government. Put it on the receipt where it belongs.

Although the summer trade will increase this coming season because people, like in the middle of the COVID-19 attack, will come to Lake Geneva from Chicago because it’s closer and the expense of getting her and not having to stay overnight will not be there. And ergo, it will cost less to get away from the big city for a while without spending a lot of money on extraneous expenses. Right now, international travel is off the books.  Anyone going abroad might just stop and consider just how badly they might be treated since the USA has begun threatening Greenland, Denmark, Canada, Mexico, and Panama with military takeovers. The current leadership has just announced that it’s just too bad that an American is taken by the ICE police and sent to El Salvador to that death camp (built with U.S. funding) and that even if being sent there was because of a mistake that you can’t be retrieved and brought home. While you may be dying in a foreign prison, the U.S. Supreme Court will be taking many months to decide if that’s okay or not, and then the current leadership might just choose to ignore the Supreme Court decision to bring the person (or their body) home.

A local keystone store in Lake Geneva’s downtown, located at Main and Broad Streets just sold and the new couple took over.  D.J and Emily are great people, but one wonders, as things develop with the application of whatever tariffs are applied, what will be the result of that purchase, given that new wholesale prices are about to be imposed and almost nothing in that location is made in the USA. The best advice to hand to any business, until all this settles out, is to keep your prices the same as they have been for so long, as your customer base remains much more important than making money ahead of the tariff effects. Right now, the customers you have trust you, not the current government or the leadership. That loyalty has to be earned back, as you have already established your own.  You don’t know where you are going, and neither do your customers, but they do know they are going there with you.
