Front Page

READY, AIM, FIRE…

Her name is Sherri Ames.  She’s a city councilperson. The aim in the title of this article is all about her…and the ready and fire are not too far off either.  This woman felt wronged by our writing about her on the front page last week. This is what that article said about her: “and Sheri Ames, one of the other councilors, is known for not being agreeable on many issues at all, and is in total agreement with Mary Jo, however, when it comes to very deep investigation into each decision placed before this ruling body.”

When the publisher edited the front page, he did call into question the writer’s usage of tough language without a seeming shred of warmth or compliment. The writer has been fired and sent to El Salvador, and the publisher is self-medicating with that jellyfish extract supposed to bring clarity to the minds of those losing their minds.

Sherri Ames is a positive wonder on that city council. Her judgement is strong, her voice strident but modulated (other than when she took the publisher apart in public a few days ago), her stand on different proposals and items put before the council is invariably almost the same as that of the GSR editorial staff. That Sherri and a good number of her friends were not happy with what was written is now more clearly understandable. The paper supports her and hopes to win back her support as well. When we ‘take something back’ or retract it, then the result is what you are reading here, and it is important enough to Sherri, her friends, and the GSR to have it on the front page, as well.

We apologize to Sherri, not so much because it caused her to yell at us, but because she’s right and was when she read the article. It’s hard to find council people to serve in these positions, and we didn’t make it any easier for Sherri…until now. Linda Frame was also not mentioned, and she should have been.  Krause, the council, and even beaten and battered Tom Earle are an assemblage of great benefit to and for the city of Lake Geneva.

The mention of Tom Earle, head of public works, brings up another issue. The potholes that the GSR has been complaining about, harassing over, and threatening the mayor and anyone who’ll read or listen, have been repaired. Not just a spot repair, either, but a full-blown quality repair that, except for the new asphalt coloration, can’t be noticed by drivers or pedestrians. We thank Tom on behalf of everyone driving through the city and many others as well.

We don’t have Channel 25 yet, and the traffic signals still suck, but that’s not all of Tom’s fault, if any of Tom’s fault. The GSR, as demonstrated by the article mentioning Sherri Ames last week, does not always get things right.  And we did it again, so here is another front page apology.

The Porch is the neatest coffee shop going, busy as hell, yes, but wonderful in all the ways a coffee shop should be.  It’s super crispy clean, a great clean bathroom, a silent room off the main shop for privacy and quiet.  Free great speed WiFi.  Terrific people behind the bar and, surprisingly, for a coffee shop, homemade and great food.  We are sorry that aging angst allowed a negative comment to make it into last week’s issue. The Porch Coffee Shop is the GSR hangout!  Even the music is good.
