WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS…

Lake Geneva, among the many other cities, towns, villages, and more that dot the scenery of Southern Wisconsin are entering that period of time isolated for the exercise of democracy. Politics is merely all that revolves culturally around the selection of leaders. Leaders to lead at everything.  Democracy is the exercise of getting together to choose those leaders as well as other objectives that might be placed before us.

This is truly the time when it is very hard to argue that with the seemingly oxymoronic conundrum central to the opening words of the Declaration of Independence. Voting is equal for everyone. One person one vote. In Lake Geneva, many good people have been serving the people for years, and most of them think they’ve done a pretty great job, even though it’s been pointed out by this paper and other media sources that they could have done better. This election period has become more special because all the offices up for election and voting are in contention. There’s a contest for each position except the city attorney position where the man occupying that position will be there forever, apparently, even if it’s only as a bronze statue standing next to that of Gary Gygax (soon, apparently, to have such an expensive edifice).

The mayor’s position is up for grabs, with Charlene Klein holding on for dear life against a younger upstart named Todd Krause. Of course, that entire sentence is a form of editorial opinion as you read it. Todd is no more an upstart than Charlene is holding on, but you get the idea. This paper supports what and whom it feels is best for the community, the lake, and the people who live around it. But it’s not always right. That’s what’s vital about the democratic process. You get to decide for yourself, allowing for the GSR’s opinion or tossing that opinion as being not something you either agree with or think should even be here at all. Your opinion becomes more important than our own.

Joanie Yunker is running as the incumbent against Sheri Ames.  The GSR thinks Sheri is a female version of DiMaggio, ready to stand up and hit homers out of the park, while Joanie is not that, but Joanie sure as heck doesn’t feel that way. Both candidates have about an equal number of supporters. The paper supports some incumbents judged by the staff to have been great at doing their jobs.  Mary Jo Fesenmaier and Yager would be two of those, while the final run for the last alderperson to be selected to replace the retired Tim Dunn is a total tossup.

The Geneva Shore Report is not responsible for all these positions being contested ones. The community is. But having all the seats contested, as in this election, allows for the process of democracy applied to be that wonderful result of the Great American Experiment many citizens hear about all the time when they are exposed to the ‘real’ media nationally. The world is not filled with elections like those about to be undertaken in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, as witnessed by the Russian dictatorial results in that supposed election held only a few days ago.

Nobody mad at Joe Biden or angry with Donald Trump has been killed to not allow a protesting voice to be heard, much less voted for. America is a lot like the GSR (or so the staff feels) in that it is ‘full of it,’ antagonistic, questioning, and at times unfair, but steadfast in wanting to know what’s really going on and what’s behind what’s really going on.  Along with that pursuit, not truly believing most of what is being told. Meet the candidates, whether they come to you or not.  Questioning them.  Decide upon them, Vote for them. You are so very special in the world and so are the people who will either vote for or not perform that wondrous task in their favor.
