Little Gems

A sinkhole with legs. The Lake Geneva parking lot sinkhole refuses to die. They filled it in with special absorbent gravel and then let the material settle. Well, settle it did. The stuff sank down a couple of feet and there the hole sits, waiting to consume a front or rear tire or whatever from passing or parking cars. The ominous feature of the whole is not that the material put inside to fill it didn’t do that.

Nope. It’s the fifteen foot cracks that radiate out from the hole’s center that are mildly bothersome. Those cracks, after being measured and then calculated for square footage, encompass an area of approximately a thousand square feet. There might be giant sinkhole waiting to reveal itself down there. Why are the cracks going out in four directions? There are no other significant cracks in the asphalt anywhere around this specific area. This sinkhole might take some serious looking into on the part of engineers and other experts more accustomed to dealing with problems of this nature.

One Pet, One Vet.
The 1Pet1Vet organization is reaching out to our returning veterans. Many veterans return home not quite the same as when they left due to brain and other physical injuries incurred during their time overseas. Many develop post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety, or psychological injuries generally unseen. Sadly, twenty-two (22) veterans a day take their own lives. Most people have never been to war and therefore cannot truly appreciate the difficulties of the physical and psychological challenges these men and women face on a daily basis, which can result in severe depression or suicide. 1pet1vet is simultaneously saving the lives of veterans who might contemplate suicide, and also dogs that might otherwise be facing euthanasia. 1pet1vet matches specially selected dogs into partnerships with veterans helping them cope with their emotional and physical scars. Professional animal trainers rehabilitate the dogs and teach them to fit into the veteran’s life style and needs.

1pet1vet has a fundraiser 22miles for 22lives (the number of veterans that commit suicide each day) September 11, 2016 at the Riviera. The walk will start at 8am and go around the lake (22 miles). Sign up for the walk, or place a flag along the walking path around the lake and put a bowl of water out for the dogs. One hundred percent (100%) of all donations and proceeds go to 1pet1vet organization. Tickets can be purchased online at www.1pet1vet.com under the event tab.

Flu shots for Veterans. The Veteran’s Administration is now cooperating with Walgreens. Flu shots are being handed out (injected) for free if a veteran comes in with either a Veteran’s Identification Card or a military I.D. The staff at Walgreens is crisp, efficient and quick, but don’t go in there at a bad time because they will make you wait in that line at the counter to register before they will shoot you up.

When’s a good time? Mid-day on weekday afternoons, but not after three. The wait isn’t really that bad but many veterans’ have short fuses (like many of us) and don’t like to wait.
