LITTLE GEMS
Valentine’s Day, celebrated annually on February 14,
Valentine’s Day is a holiday dedicated to expressing love and affection through cards, flowers, candy, and gifts. Originating from ancient Roman rituals and later Christian martyrs named Valentinus, it evolved into a romantic celebration during the Middle Ages. The day is named for at least one, possibly two, Christian martyrs from the 3rd century. One popular legend says St. Valentine was imprisoned for defying Emperor Claudius II by marrying young lovers in secret and signed a note to his jailer’s daughter, “From Your Valentine”.
The connection to romantic love solidified in the Middle Ages, with formal “valentine” messages appearing in the 18th century and mass-produced cards beginning in the 19th century. By the 1700s, people exchanged love notes, and the modern-day version of Valentine’s Day was born. TheThe
