LITTLE GEMS

Lake Geneva gamblers get ready as Super Bowl Sunday is coming on February 12th.
The Care Bear will be in and around town, celebrating the absorption of as much money is available into the gambling system down in Illinois, where sports betting is legal everywhere.   In Wisconsin, sports betting is so far only legal at the Oneida Indian Casino, although there’s plenty of talk that it will also become legal in Milwaukee.  If you are a person reading this who frequents the establishments that offer illegal gambling, and you know who they are, then please remember that the bookies don’t have to pay you if you win big.  Where are you going to go if they simply leave town, head back down to Illinois and welchs on the deal?  The GSR would love to get hold of any complaint submitted to the Lake Geneva Police Department over such an outrageous issue.

Valentine’s Day is less than a week away.
There are many great restaurants offering Valentine Day specials, and a lot of the downtown shops are ready to help you pick that perfect gift for your valentine.  Don’t forget some chocolate from Kilwins. This day is all about love. Valentine’s Day is a day to express affection and love for significant others and has been expanded to include relatives and friends. Valentine’s Day may have some rather dark origins (a Roman holiday in the 3rd century that included whippings and a lot of other rather unmentionably stuff, as the holiday celebrated fertility) but that is not the case anymore. Enjoy the day, be good to each other, and love someone special with all your heart.

The nearest Barnes and Noble to Lake Geneva is in either Deerfield or Racine.
That’s the closest ‘real’ bookstore.  If you go these days, then be ready with your sunglasses.  When you walk in these modern versions of the wonderful old bookstores you will find the hard copy bestsellers and some other books featured on racks near the front door.  These display racks will blow you away, ifyou’ve got any age and literary life experience at all.  The new books out with dust jackets are all wearing awful, classless, and terribly and tastelessly bright covers.  The colors are garish and it’s almost like the whole set of displays has been put up to get customers to buy only the ugliest of books.  Oh, how life is changing and at what great speed.
