LITTLE GEMS

There was a battle joined.
Sherri Ames, the brand-new firebrand of city council member went at it with Joel Hoiland, another newly elected alderperson.  The ‘fight’ was over the issuance of limited parking stickers for city council members to use while performing the necessary details of being council members. Joel decided to take on Sherri Ames over the potential of free parking for business purposes for city council members.  Joel was opposed because, justifiably, he thought such a move, so soon after the election would send a bad message and quite possibly allow a newspaper to run a headline like ‘City Council gives itself free parking as first order of business as they take control.”

Both of them were correct in the opinion of the GSR staff.  The city council should have free parking, but Joel had a point.  They are elected and the feelings of their constituents truly matter.  The ‘dean of students’ called them into his office…and then wished he hadn’t.  Sherri took bites out of Joel that will take some time to heal.  The dean, Todd Krause, immediately got on a flight to Italy with his family for a couple of weeks.  Sherri and Joel will continue to work apart on the city council, hopefully coming together to make necessary decisions of import for the whole community.

Starting this June, Wisconsin residents will have the option of adding one emergency contact to their record.
This contact information will be available to law enforcement agencies if you are in a collision or are experiencing a medical emergency. The applicant will be asked if they would like to include emergency contact information in their file. Adding the information is voluntary. If you would like to have an emergency contact listed, you will be required to provide the contact’s name, residential address, phone number, and relationship to you. This information will not be printed on the driver’s license or ID card. This information may save crucial time if ever it becomes necessary to contact your family members or other loved ones.

You can also go to wiscosindot.gov to add an emergency contact to your existing license.

The first water rescue of the season took place on Lake Como over the weekend. At 5:05 pm on June 16th, the Lake Geneva Fire Department was dispatched to the north shore of Lake Como for a sinking boat with victims in the water. Multiple agencies, vehicles, and responders got to the scene including the Town of Geneva Police Department and the Walworth County Sheriff’s Department. Two people were taken out of the water with the use of a police boat.

Due to the quick actions of the on-duty Town of Geneva police officers and the use of their police boat, two victims were successfully retrieved from the water. The victims were evaluated by EMS and released. Chief Peters said that boaters should be aware of any possible change in weather conditions.
