LITTLE GEMS

Incandescent light bulbs.
Do not buy them anymore!  Not at all.  And this article about them has nothing to do with saving money on your electricity bills or saving the environment.  This article is about saving your life.

The newer, and the last of, incandescent light bulbs are all being made in China or Mexico. Forget General Electric and Sylvania and all the American companies that used to manufacture them.  These new bulbs are all made with inadequate vacuum.  Heat does not move through a vacuum.  You can immediately tell that these new bulbs are dangerous because you can take a piece of paper and start it burning, if laid against a two- or three-hundred-watt bulb, and it will begin to burn and turn into actual flames in minutes. These bulbs also burn out in two weeks or less if they don’t burn down your home.  Think of one of these bulbs accidentally touching an old shade, and you’re not around when the shade goes up!

The new substitute LED models they are making today, in the same wattage equivalent range, cost twice as much, but last for years and do not heat up like that, at all.  You can put the new ones in and change them or handle them, or whatever, and they won’t even burn your fingers.  Do not buy incandescent.  The incandescent lights the GSR tested were bought from Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Sentry, and Lowes.  There were off the shelf stuff.  We’d been told but we didn’t really believe it until we tested.  Try testing them yourself and quite possibly save your life and your home.

Toys for Tots campaign has begun.
It is easy to find Toys for Tots collection bins all over the place. Right downtown in Lake Geneva there are a few regular locations, just to mention a few; Harbor Shores, Lake Geneva Chevrolet, Walgreens, and the public Library. It’s the giving season and people are in need. The Lake Geneva Library has its Toys for Tots bin available, now ready to fill with new (remember, only new!) items for the kids of Walworth County. The box will be available for donations until December 6th. The library is also accepting donations for its giving tree. The tree may not be in place yet but don’t let that stop you.  Donations of new or handmade hats and mittens are also being accepted at the front desk. Check out the other locations around town and if you are able to give.
