LITTLE GEMS

Apple picking season is upon us.
From now until late September, early October is the best time to pick apples. This period marks the peak ripeness of late-season apple varieties like Fuji and Granny Smith. Right in time for Thanksgiving and all the delicious fall recipes. After being picked properly chilled apples can last up to a month or two. If kept in a fruit bowl they will last up to a couple of days.

The Apple Barn  Orchard and Winery, on Sugar Creek Road in Elkhorn, is open for apple picking or you can purchase bags of apples in their store.

Royal Oak Farm in Harvard IL offers apple picking for $12 per person, including access to the orchard, access to the Pollination Garden, and 1/4 Peck (3lb) Bag to Fill in the Orchard.

The Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago has Harvest Fest every weekend in September and October. Stop by to not only purchase one of the most famous apple pies (baked in a brown paper bag) but also to pick your apples. Apple orchards are a great way to spend time together and enjoy some great treats for the upcoming holiday season.
