Little Gems
Where are you going to give, with the tragedy in Houston growing daily?
If you give to Goodwill you are making a mistake. That operation does nothing at all for the needy except sell stuff pretty cheap that they get for nothing. The American Red Cross has suffered corruption scandal after scandal for returning too little to the people it helps while paying the CEO a six-figure income. Forget UNICEF. It returns only 5 percent to poor kids around the world. The CEO of that organization drives a company paid and maintained Rolls Royce.
So, where do you go? The Salvation Army! Outstanding! They return 95% to the people who need it. The American Legion returns it all to veterans!!! And so does the Military Order of the Purple Heart. The Lions Club is an outstanding bunch of do-gooders working for free and doing all sorts of things for the poor, homeless and those in Houston’s kind of trouble. Make A Wish is another great one, as is the Ronald McDonald House. Take the time to go online and check out what’s written here, and then give where and when you can, but be wise about it. No more generous people on earth live than in Southern Wisconsin, but the people living here are prudent, careful and do their homework.
So, do your homework.
Grease isn’t just a movie.
It’s also a slippery substance used to cook all manner of foods. Before cooking it’s called lard, olive oil, canola, and other things. After being used it’s simply grease. Grease that’s got to be dumped somewhere. Several years ago the city administrator of the City of Lake Geneva was approached in an attempt to get him to have the street department put small buffers around the grease depot containers located in Lake Geneva’s alleys behind the bigger downtown restaurants. The city administrator declined, as he could not see the grease spills as being a problem. The grease spillage problem remains with us and there’s a photo of a big spill in this issue. There’s an easy fix. Small barriers could be erected around the grease collection points. The expense would be low, and the grease would be prevented from flowing directly into the lake, as it now often does.
Greasy Mess

The stuff that comes out of deep fat fryers and from the stoves of the local restaurants.
What is to be done with the spillage, and here is a good portion of it. This five-gallon spill went directly into the storm drain which then drained straight into the lake. These pick up containers are all over and need much more supervision, protection, and accountability.
