LIVING HERE

The Town of Linn.
This small but well-heeled town, set into the very southern portion of Walworth County remains a very neatly run and well-administered oasis among small unincorporated regions across the country.  Jim Weiss, the chairman of the very well organized and cooperative board (amazingly, an uncommon occurrence for such tiny governmental regions in America) has proven to be a master at guiding the town through one soft crisis (with major potential) after another.  The new chief of police (Jon Albrecht) is like the new chief in Lake Geneva, warm of heart but tough as hell in enforcement policy and application.  A great mix, with a crew of officers that is just like him.  The fire department and street department work tirelessly without compliment because their work appears so mundane, when it is really vital to everyone living in and around the town.

This example of a community that really works and functions smoothly together is an example that ought to be followed throughout the country, but, in general, is not.  The Merry Christmas gift of the leaders of the community is the very existence of that leadership in its current form.  Even the City Clerk’s (Alyson Morris) office runs like a finely oiled and silent machine in handling elections, taxes and more in a very efficient and caring manner.  Jim Hurley, the very capable administrator and treasurer, is always immediately on hand and readily available, unlike most city administrators around the state.  And  they are all so damned polite and nice!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be inside a life size snow globe?
Now you can do just that. Coming in January to the Ridge Hotel on Highway 50 is the brand-new snow globe experience. The snow globes look part like a glass carriage, part stargazing observatory, and part magical cave to make memories with friends and family. Each globe fits up to eight people including an overhead infrared heater and under bench forced air system to help ward off that cold winter chill. Each reservation is granted ninety minutes in the globes plus a Crafted Italia server will provide your apps and drinks from an exclusive menu. Prices are Sunday through Thursday $75 rental fee + $125 food & beverage minimum. Friday through Saturday $150 rental fee + $250 food & beverage minimum. Make sure to dress appropriately in your winter gear and bring extra blankets as it gets very cold as the sun goes down. We do live in Wisconsin after all. What a fun and imaginative way to enjoy winters in Wisconsin by cozying up in your very own snow globe watching the snowfall.

The only disappointment at all in the Hillmoor property purchase result.
The city council voted on Monday night to keep the Hillmoor property off limits to visitors, including residents, property owners and voters.  It would seem that the liability is currently unknown so the insurance company must be notified of the purchase and give its opinion about whether the people who now own the property can set foot on it.  That insurance decision will probably be made some time near the 12th of never in today’s delayed and ‘the world is round, we’ll get there,’ kind of thinking and operation.  Too bad. The Lake Geneva city council, like its mayor, can make some great decisions (like buying the property) but is also well capable of making rather air-headed decisions about smaller stuff.
