LIVING HERE

The Walworth County Fairgrounds Ribfest is here.
The event starts Wednesday, July 13th, and goes through Sunday, July 17th. That’s five days of mouthwatering, finger-licking good barbecue. Ribfest goers can enjoy award-winning ribs from professional BBQ champions, great entertainment, an artisan’s village, carnival rides, and much more. Sunday will also host a community division rib competition. Cooking starts at 9 a.m., while judging will go from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., with awards at 5:45 p.m. on the main stage. Admission and parking are free, so take advantage of a fun time and lots of great food.   From a Geneva Shore Report opinion about attending and testing the ribs every year, it’s best to go there in the late morning, as the ribs first served have been on the coals for the longest time.

The Williams Bay High School culinary and restaurant management program has received some national recognition and financial support.
A celebrity chef, Food Network star, and talk show host has awarded the program a $5000 grant, one of the only thirty-eight grants in the country. Rachel Ray’s ProStart Grow Grant Program was founded to support the continued development and expansion of culinary and restaurant management programs and is sponsored by the Rachel Ray Foundation. Thanks to Rachel Ray the Williams Bay High School will be able to continue the growth of its program and expand opportunities for the students. ProStart is a two-year technical education program found in more than 1,750 schools around the nation in both high school and technical schools. The program teaches students, through a combination of classroom and industry instruction. Earlier this year the Rachel Ray Foundation contributed $225,000 to the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation in support of ProStart Grow Grants to help programs exactly like that awarded to Williams Bay High School.

At Williams Bay, the funds will be used to establish program goals to continue to increase the number of students taking the ProStart courses. Over the last three years, the program has grown not only in course options but the number of students enrolling in the program. The school is excited to be able to add more equipment to the classroom for a more hands-on approach to teaching and learning. Rachel Ray says it best “ProStart programs, and the educators who support them, provide high school students across the country with skills they need to be successful throughout life,” which is exactly what she’s done right here in the Geneva Lake community by supporting the youth and giving them a chance to achieve their goals and dreams.
