LIVING HERE
A new and unique experience has come to Lake Como in the Town of Geneva.
The Svett Club operates a Norwegian-style floating sauna (“Svett Ship”) on Lake Como, moored at the French Country Inn. It offers authentic hot-and-cold thermal therapy where you can sauna and take refreshing plunges directly into the lake. This is a Finnish-style sauna, which uses heated rocks to generate the heat. This creates a much higher temperature than infrared. It also allows water, with or without aromatic oils, to be poured on the rocks to increase the temperature and humidity.
This is known as ‘löyly’ in the Finnish language and is an essential, almost sacred requirement of a proper sauna. Owner Erik Munck, a Chicago native who has been coming to the Geneva Lakes area since he was a kid, says this is one of the first floating saunas of its kind in the US. Munck says his father is from Norway (Svett means ‘sweat’ in Norwegian), and he was inspired to build this during his last trip to Norway, where he went on a sauna boat with his family. ‘Svett Ship’ sauna boat offers dockside sessions or charters for up to six people. Svett Club brings sauna and cold plunge to the lakeside for an unforgettable experience.
Known as the thermal cycle, it involves alternating between 165 – 210℉ heat and 40 – 60℉ water. Regular practice has been shown to reduce the risk of stroke and hypertension. It promotes muscle relaxation & eliminates lactic acid after exercising. Promotes deeper sleep and regulates cortisol levels. You get a sense of accomplishment and increased stamina through ‘good’ or hormetic stress. One out and relax or connect with others face-to-face. Get outside and enjoy the natural elements! Open sessions are $35 for one hour, and private sessions for up to six people are $175 for one hour. Appointments can be made at www.svettclub.com.
