Hit and run in Lake Geneva.
September 19th, Thursday morning at approximately 7:54 a.m. on Broad Street near Geneva Street a vehicle vs pedestrian occurred. This incident was a hit-and-run as the vehicle did not stop. Lake Geneva officers are looking for the suspect and the vehicle involved. Officers are looking for a white Dodge Ram that may or may not have damage to the front driver’s side bumper or quarter panel. The condition of the victim is still unknown at this time. If you have any information on this vehicle or the driver of the vehicle, call the police department at 262-248-4455. Unfortunately, this is not a rare occurrence.
Lake Geneva has an abundance of pedestrians more often than not, the traffic in Lake Geneva is also not lacking, making vehicles vs pedestrians a thing. Safety needs to be a priority slow down, expect traffic and pedestrians, and look out for others.
At the request of Alderperson Fesenmaier DPW is looking into the possibility of reducing the speed limit on Main Street in front of Hillmoor between Lockwood Blvd and Curtis Street.
Fesenmaier is concerned with the safety of this roadway as it is heavily traveled at times and believes the current speed limit is too much and unsafe. Not everyone agrees with this change and does not think a speed change will improve traffic issues here and may even make it worse, however, Fesenmaier has enough support with the change to move forward. The city has jurisdiction to set the limit based on engineering, however, because this roadway connects to a highway WisDOT has the authority to set all speed limits in the state.
All speed limit changes require a traffic engineering study to be done. The issue was discussed at previous meetings and with the city attorney. City Attorney Draper agreed that a traffic study by a qualified traffic engineer needs to be done. If all statutes are followed and the engineering study warrants a reduction, WisDOT approval is not needed unless the speed limit change is below 25mph or if this stretch of roadway has already had a prior reduction. The current speed between Lockwood Blvd and Curtis Street is 40mph and was originally 55mph so it will need a study showing a need and approval from the DOT. The traffic study will be the determining factor if this moves forward or not but if so, many steps need to happen before this is a done deal.
Halloween is a controversial discussion every year at Lake Geneva City Hall.
The city council once again discussed when trick or treating will take place. Council members try to accommodate the citizens’ requests and make trick-or-treating convenient for everyone. This is an impossible task. The people who believe in the Halloween tradition of trick or treating being on Halloween and happening during the evening hours making it a little spooky are always the ones disappointed.
Lake Geneva seems to always go with daytime hours and try to work around school, work, kid’s naps, and football games, making it impossible to please all. This year the discussion is to have trick or treating on Sunday, October 27th from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. In the name of efficiency and to not have the same conversation every year there will be an ordinance written proclaiming that trick or treating will be the last Sunday of October unless Halloween falls on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday then trick or treating will be on the actual day of Halloween.
