OUR PLACE

A heat wave hit Wisconsin last week with temperatures reaching 100 degrees.
Last week on Tuesday the temperature inched its way up, reaching the middle nineties. Wednesday the real extreme temps came reaching the middle to high 90’s with humidity high the heat index was higher. Thursday was the worst of the heat with temperatures reaching over one hundred degrees and a heat index of 115 degrees due to the high humidity and lack of air movement. The little bit of breeze that was available was not much of a relief, as it felt more like a fan in front of a furnace. The combination of high heat and humidity can compromise the body’s cooling system. As a result, heat stress and illness can be significantly increased.

Wisconsin does not typically reach such high temps, but it is not unheard of either. August however is not the typical month for record heat. The all-time record heat in Wisconsin, reaching 114 degrees, not including a heat index, was recorded in Wisconsin Dells on July 13, 1936 (115). The longest streak of 100-degree days in Wisconsin was in 1988, with six days in a row of extreme heat. Since 1901 Wisconsin has seen just over thirty days of 100 degrees. With last week’s heat behind us most look forward to cooler temps and the upcoming change is season and are ready to welcome fall.
