Friday morning mayhem comes down right after the Geneva Shore Report indicated that it has been a winter season of no snow.
The first real snowfall of the season caused a bit of a mess during everyone’s commute to work and school. This is just the first of many. The snow came just in time for the morning rush. The visibility was not great, and then the icy rainy mist came, followed by thick heavy snow which accumulated quickly. Just like in any other year, drivers had to get the hang of winter driving all over again. In less than an hour, over six accidents occurred in and around the Geneva Lake area. That does not include the numerous cars sliding on roadways and getting stuck in ditches.
Here are some tips for driving in wintery conditions: stay home, only go out, if necessary, drive slow if out there, accelerate and decelerate very gently, and keep extra distance from other cars, and if you start to slide steer into the skid. Always clear a car off completely of snow and take extra time warming up the vehicle. When visibility is an issue, make sure to put lights on to not only see better but also for other drivers to see your vehicle better. In 2016 the law about lights was changed and now the state law states that drivers must turn on their headlights when weather conditions limit visibility (this includes heavy snowfalls, which are sometimes accompanied by haze or fog). Be careful out there.
The Business Improvement District (BID) board broke apart in disagreement over just about everything.
That happened last week, with Dimitri Anagnos resigning due to conflicts he felt could not be overcome with the board president (Speedo Condos). Both men own very successful restaurants located right next to each other on Wrigley near the intersection with Broad Street. Dimitri and Speedo could not agree to let go the most excellent Cristina (part-time events coordinator) or keep her but pay her more money for a full-time position, as the work she had to do was so obviously that of what was needed to be a full-time employee. They could not agree on the replacement (Speedo wanting the most experienced and not attached, related, or involved Alexi currently working at Visit Lake Geneva, while Demitri wanted the sister-in-law of one of the managers of his Popeyes Restaurant, that restaurant right next to Speedo’s Harborside Grill on Wrigley.
Speedo won that round, but Dimitri was furious and stormed out of the meeting, only to end up at VISIT to indicate that Alex was looking and interviewing for the BID job. That didn’t go down well at the VISIT headquarters, but the action, almost in itself, guaranteed the hiring of Alex, which was immediately done. Both Demertri and Speedo have very aged and successful restaurant operations and the BID will have a hard time replacing the friendship and cooperation those two brought to the BID right after the last time the BID fell apart two years ago. What’s coming now? Nobody knows and few people are talking. The next BID meeting is in January, so until that time almost anything that is learned will probably be of the rumor kind.
