OUR PLACE

The Christmas tree lighting has come and gone.
There was a very small crowd Friday in Flat Iron Park for the annual tree lighting and visit from Santa. This annual event is put together by the Business Improvement District (BID) but was under-marketed this year. There was little done to promote the event and it seems only those who knew that it always falls on the first Friday in December were in attendance. The BID has one part-time person on their payroll planning and executing all their events, which is a huge responsibility. There is a lot that goes into the planning, organizing, set up, marketing and hosting of large events and sometimes a little help from some friends goes a long way.

There was the promise of a cocoa crawl this year to compliment the tree lighting, but time ran out and it never came to fruition. Other communities used this to their advantage and started their own cocoa crawls which were very successful. This is the season of community, giving, forgiveness and generosity so instead of distancing themselves the BID needs to put their differences aside and come together as a team to help remind people what makes Lake Geneva so special.

The event you may be waiting for, “World’s Tallest Glass Tree” this past weekend at Yerkes Observatory.
Here are a few tips for planning your visit to the event which will run for the next two weekends. The Yerkes Observatory parking is reserved for the Yerkes Observatory tour ticket holders,  So, anyone coming to see the glass tree and browse the Christmas market is to park at the Williams Bay High School which is located at the Geneva Street entrance from which a trolley can be taken to the observatory.  This is a magical event and free to the public. The construction of the glass tree is an event in itself but don’t forget the holiday market either, which is pretty neat. For more details about this one-of-a- kind experience check out Yerkes Observatory on its Facebook Page.
