OUR PLACE
Tragically, an eighty-one-year-old male lost his life early Tuesday morning, July 19, 2022.
Lake Geneva officers responded to the 1200 block of Williams Street for a car vs pedestrian accident. EMS personnel performed lifesaving measures but sadly the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Broad Street, Williams Street, and Interchange North, all different parts of the same road, have become increasingly busy and dangerous. The idea of additional traffic signals has been discussed and even studied.
The Stone Ridge neighborhood located off Williams and Center Street just a block or so northeast of the recent fatality has been the intersection discussed for a possible traffic signal and is currently awaiting study results to determine if it is warranted. Most agree that additional traffic signals would be beneficial on this roadway, but is this particular intersection the answer? The intersection is busy with in and out traffic from the Stoneridge development would be only a short block away from the Interchange North and Sheridan Springs traffic signal. This neighborhood may benefit more from an additional accessway.
The developer of Stoneridge was originally required to include this in the development but never followed through. What about all the traffic a little south on Williams near the crosswalk at Williams and Milwaukee, Grant, and Marshall? This area has a handful of access roads that wait a long minute to enter and exit Williams Street. The area has become increasingly dangerous, and accidents have become the norm. Monday night city meetings included the results of the traffic signal potential at Center Street and Interchange North, as well. The study by the county concluded that there isn’t enough traffic for a signal. If there is to be one then it will have to be put in by the developer and the local community.
Coincidental to the traffic fatality on Tuesday, another 81-year-old man died of drowning in Geneva Lake. Apparently, his paddle board was struck by the wake of a passing boat. The man was not wearing a life vest. Please wear life vests when out on the lake, especially for the kids and those on paddle boards.
The 2022 Venetian Festival 60th Anniversary.
2022 celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Lake Geneva Jaycees Venetian Festival. The five-day Festival runs from August 17th-21st and takes place at Flat Iron, Library, and Seminary Parks in picturesque downtown Lake Geneva. Venetian Festival features a weekend of great family entertainment including a Craft Fair, Carnival, Water ski show, and local cuisine including a brat stand and beer tent. This is all capped off on Sunday with a traditional Venetian Style lighted boat parade followed by the area’s largest fireworks display high above Geneva Lake. The Lake Geneva Jaycees Annual Venetian Festival was founded in 1962. For sixty years, the Venetian Festival has been the banner event for the Lake Geneva Jaycees Chapter. It represents the largest revenue generator for the club. The net profits all go back into the local community and not-for-profit organizations. As Venetian Festival has grown over the years, so have the donations from the Jaycees to the community.
