A Walworth County Public Health alert was issued on July 1, 2025.
The alert notified the community of a suspected opioid overdose alert for Walworth County. These alerts are triggered when the number of opioid overdoses in emergency departments is statistically higher than usual in a specific area. Walworth County has observed a rise in overdose cases linked to the illegal use of drugs, many of which contain fentanyl.
Synthetic opioids, primarily fentanyl, were identified in 91% of opioid overdoses and 73% of all drug overdose deaths in Wisconsin in the past year, indicating widespread contamination of the illicit drug supply. Signs of an overdose include pale, sweaty, or clammy skin. Lips/fingertips turn blue. Slow or irregular breathing; gasping, gurgling, or snoring. Difficult or unable to wake. The Walworth County Department of Health and Human Services provides Narcan and Fentanyl test strips to the public at no cost.
Local citizens were a bit ‘peeved’ that the Lake Geneva 4th of July parade was cancelled.
The Lake Geneva Police Department and residents got into a heated exchange on social media Friday after the city canceled its Fourth of July parade due to inclement weather. The parade was organized by the local chapter of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, a nonprofit comprising family members of American veterans. With the rain and storms on Friday morning, the legion decided to cancel the parade, thinking that it was the best and safest option for all involved.
The Lake Geneva Police Department was quick to respond, pointing out that fact: “When the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary called to tell us they were canceling their parade this morning, our first thought was, thanks for letting us know, we’ll get the message out, not ‘they are communists’ or ‘this is ridiculous’ or any other self-centered train of thought,” the department wrote in a follow-up Facebook post. “Many of these women are the spouses or family of veterans and deserve our respect for their support of our veterans. Hopefully, everyone can work through this hardship on their day.” The department added, “We’ll get back to serving the community and keeping everyone safe from communist activity.”
