The City of Lake Geneva’s fire chief indicated that visitors need to help cover the cost of using the city’s emergency services.
The budget is tight in all departments within the city especially with the cost of all products and cost of living constantly increasing. This also pertains to the need for emergency personnel within Lake Geneva. With so many visitors and more people finding the city the need for emergency personnel has increased. Chief Peters has been brainstorming and researching ways to help redeem the cost from the visitors so that the responsibility doesn’t fall on the residents.
One solution would be to ticket drivers involved in an accident which is common among many municipalities. A long way back the City of Lake Geneva did cite drivers involved in an accident, but it became too complicated trying to cite by who was at fault especially if the courts became involved. The new proposal would be to cite all drivers involved in the accident whether they are at fault or not. If the driver is a resident the bill would be submitted to their insurance and the city would accept whatever the insurance company would pay meaning the resident would never be sent to collections for anything above that. If the driver is a nonresident the bill would be submitted to their insurance company, then anything left would be billed to them directly and if that goes unpaid, they would be sent to collections.
The average cost for these types of citations was presented as $520, the amount of which would help increase revenue for the police and fire department making it easier to afford the personnel and equipment needed to provide adequate services. The idea was floated by the chief, but no action was requested or taken.
