Living in a tourist-dependent area of the country.
Lake Geneva is all of that. Note how quickly employees of the local businesses come and go, many times seemingly in the dark of the night. One day you show up and the person is simply not there anymore. That can be more emotionally troubling than most people want to talk about. In Santa Fe, New Mexico, such comings and goings with little or no announcement have become so common that there’s a series of sayings about it. “If you show up for the interview or application you’ve got the job. If you stay working for six months, you are the manager. If you stay for two years, you own the business.”
Of course, nobody stays for two years in tourist environments. The press of humanity and constant changing of the customer base is emotionally and physically hard. Also, inexplicably, the pay for employees working in tourist areas is usually pretty lousy. Employers, by and large, in these areas, think that workers should be happy to be working in such a fun and busy environment. Mythology is a strange thing when differentially applied.
