SURPRISING STUFF
Applications are open for the Yerkes 2026 undergraduate summer internship.
By participating in this internship, students will work with on-site telescopes, including their 0.6-meter and 1-meter reflectors and 40″ Great Refractor, and the historic glass plate collection. Gain valuable experience in astronomy research and instrumentation. Engage the public with astronomy by supporting Yerkes programming and events. Receive science communication mentorship and present your work at the end of the program.
Applications for the internship will close on Monday, February 9, 2026, at 5 p.m. Applicants should expect to hear back from us by early March 2026. If you have questions about your application or the application process, please email science-info@yerkesobservatory.org. Who can participate? Current undergraduate students and recently graduated students who are not currently enrolled in a graduate program with a B.S. or B.A. in astronomy, physics, computer science, or other related STEM fields. Those who have graduated in May 2025 or later are eligible to apply.
This program is open to both domestic and international applicants who are enrolled at a school in the United States. Students studying at community colleges and 2-year institutions are also encouraged to apply. Students will receive a $5,625 stipend for completing the program, as well as up to $500 for travel to and from the observatory. Yerkes Observatory will provide on-site housing with private bedrooms for each intern and a full, shared kitchen. Occasional meals will be provided, but interns generally will be responsible for their own food.
Bring the family to the Lake Geneva Egg Harbor Cafe for a memorable holiday morning.
Santa will be making his rounds, mixing and mingling with every guest right at your table. Be sure to have your cameras and wish lists ready, as he’ll be stopping by for photos during breakfast. Santa will be visiting all the way from the North Pole from 9 a.m. to noon. This event is first-come, first-served. No RSVPs or tickets are required; just come and enjoy!
Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be at Something Sweet on Saturday, December 20th, from noon to 4 p.m.
During this time, we will be hosting our annual Build-Your-Own-Gift Basket event. This is an interactive event where families can create their own personal gift baskets to give using any items purchased in our shop. There will be a craft station where kids can decorate their own baskets to fill. They also offer a variety of other baskets, stockings, bows, wraps, and fillers to choose from. There will also be several Santa helpers available to assist with designing and assembling gift baskets, or to take orders for those who prefer not to make their own. There is no cost for the basket if store items are purchased to fill it.
