SURPRISING STUFF

Cold as the driven snow.
The republicans in the Wisconsin state legislature, both houses (both overwhelmingly republican) voted to deny unemployment insurance payments to claimants who’ve lost jobs after 14 weeks. Currently, unemployment payments last for 26 weeks, allowing almost six months for a discharged (conditionally, of course) employee to find other employment.  Under Vos’ leadership, those payments would be tied to the state’s unemployment statistics.  Like a discharged employee has any interest whatever in what’s happening with respect to any state published unemployment number.

This is an attack, once again, by these insulated over wealthy and overpaid people to hurt and deny those who are not as powerful or monied.  The governor, being a democrat, will likely veto this bill, but with the overwhelming numbers of republicans slipped into their positions, his veto could be rather easily overturned.  Sixty-Six percent of the citizens of Wisconsin are employed. What is that sixty-six percent going to wake up and decide that the republican party has taken a turn into cold-hearted thought and behavior, and must be challenged and forced to care for the people once again?

Brutal competition.
There’s a great coffee shop right near the entrance to Geneva National, located about five miles west of Lake Geneva proper.  That coffee/wine/whiskey bar is quality built and serves high-quality products, across the board.  The building also is home to the same owners who have Mia Faccia, that terrific beauty center.  What’s happening out there?

The little alcove that existed for years right off of Mia Faccia’s doorstep turns out to have been sold to a developer from Chicago.  He recently had the cute alcove razed, and all sources close to the new project say the same thing.  The developer wants to build a combined convenience store and a coffee shop, indoor and drive-through.

The Niche Coffee Shop is located around the back of the building.  A full coffee shop with a drive-through (Niche does not have the kind of property that will allow for a drive-through) will almost doom the Niche.  Lowell, the builder of the developing complex on the property, is supporting this new effort, or so rumor has it.  The property is located on Town of Geneva land, so there’s little in the way of the kind of ordinances, commissions, committees, and councils that might keep something like this from happening in Lake Geneva.
