Small towns and the citizens get screwed again
The USPS is again forced to treat them with utter disrespect or care. Effective December 24, 2025, the USPS moved the postmarking process from local post offices to Regional Processing & Distribution Centers (RPDCs). Postmarks now reflect the date mail is processed at a regional center, not the date it is deposited in a local collection box. This change may delay the postmark date by 1-2 days, potentially impacting time-sensitive items like tax payments, bills, and ballots.
This may affect your tax payment since the local Post Office doesn’t apply a same-day postmark anymore. It is recommended that you mail your tax payment earlier than usual to be sure it is timely, and no late fees are assessed.
To be on time, payments must be received by the proper official within the five working-day grace period OR after the five-day grace period – payments must be properly addressed and postmarked before midnight of the due date. Under state law, late payments may be considered timely if the delay was due to a USPS delay or administrative error (sec. 74.69(2), Wis. Stats.).
A taxpayer may file a written request with the county treasurer requesting the county board determine their payment as timely (sec. 74.69(3)(b), Wis. Stats.). The County board makes the determination to consider the late payment as timely if the sole reason the payment was not timely is due to a USPS delay or administrative error. For deadline-sensitive documents, visit a post office counter to request a hand-stamped postmark for the current date. Use Certified Mail for proof of mailing or mail items several days earlier than usual. This is part of the USPS “Delivering for America” initiative to modernize operations.
