SURPRISING STUFF

There was an armed robbery at the local Dairy Queen.
Over the past weekend, on Friday at approximately 9:15 p.m., the Dairy Queen on HWY 50 just before the Delavan inlet (heading west on Highway 50) a call came in from a subject in the drive thru at the Dairy Queen. The caller reported an armed robbery occurring at the location.  Delavan police officers responded in a matter of minutes. Upon the arrival of the police Dairy Queen employees stated that the suspect entered the building demanding money while displaying a handgun. The suspect left with an undisclosed amount of cash (most of the Dairy Queen business is conducted using debit or credit cards) and one employee’s wallet. The suspect also ordered the employees to hand over all cellphones as well as taking the Dairy Queen’s normal business phone, thereby preventing employees from calling 911 immediately. A drive thru customer was able to see (somewhat) what was going on and called for help, although by that time the suspect had left on foot.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic or Black male in his twenties, anywhere from 5’6” to 5’10” feet tall, wearing dark clothing, including a hoodie, gloves, and a cloth mask. The suspect is still at large, as of this writing, however the cellphones were later found along laying along the roadside of Highway 50. A full investigation is ongoing. This local ice cream shop is employed, employing mostly young adults from the area and that fact alone has many people concerned.  Families with teenagers are worried that overall crime is on the increase and with many kids working the evening shifts after school at many different fast food or convenience stores, they are at ever greater risk.

This kind of experience is scary for anyone and can have lasting effects. No one was physically injured during the robbery but one of the victims at the Dairy Queen was treated for shock.  In truth, Delavan (according to Wisconsin Crime-Data has only hadthree robberies in the last five years, with four robberies being the worst year ever back in 2009).  Major crimes are down ten percent over the last twenty years in Delavan, making it a pretty safe city (major crime-wise) to live in.

The pilot, the Geneva Lake son, the artist…John Larkin.  This extraordinary American Airlines pilot (captain) is fifty-four years old, as he embarks on an artist’s journey of limited distinction (yet) but very meritorious work.  This is the man who designed and built the poppy sculpture for the American Legion set up on Library Park, and beloved by all. His other works, featured in an extensive video of his studio and its contents can be viewed below. The video was made on the afternoon of January 16th, if you are interested.  John is the son of Larry Larkin, another distinctive character of beneficent support and living on the edge of the Geneva Lake waters on the south shore.  Look for more on this man in the Geneva Shore Report, as we cover whatever projects he chooses to make himself a part of.
