Where are the ‘supposed’ children walking, running, and romping?
A traffic signal was put in on the Highway 120 Bypass because the road is so busy for the pretty significant speeds driven by vehicles passing.  This very expensive, and much fought over, traffic signal was put in because two schools are so close, and the children needed a safe place to cross.  Now, the signal’s in and working, stopping the flow of traffic but there are no children around. There were none when the schools were in regular session and there are none now.  It would appear that the signal was put in to wait.  If you build it, they will come kind of a thing.

Now the same powers that want to build a walking, bike, crosswalk kind of concrete ‘path’ from South Lake Shore Drive to the schools on South Street, thereby chopping down all the old oaks in everyone’s front yard who live along the way.  It’s for the children, once again, except, even during the school year, there are no children passing by to speak of.  The city wants the already approved million-dollar grant.  Why?  To give the money to some relative, family member or friend to build an unnecessary thing?

If you build it, they will come was a movie, not real life.  The money is real life.  The trees are real life.  The local property owners are real life.  Most children in those school’s ride buses or have cars or parents and relatives picking them up and dropping them off.  Time changed while city management appears to have aged significantly but is stuck in the 1950’s.
