Last Thursday, June 22nd, the City of Elkhorn Police Department was dispatched for a suicidal subject around 9:21 a.m.
The Walworth County Sheriff’s Department along with the City of Elkhorn Police were informed there was an adult male with a handgun in an apartment threatening to harm himself in the presence of his two young children. Deputies along with the Elkhorn police quickly established a perimeter and began trying to make contact with the adult male. After no progress was made backup was called with the Walworth County SWAT Team, county drone teams, Linn Township, Lake Geneva, and Delavan Police Departments. Very quickly the apartment complex was evacuated, and the surrounding area was put on lockdown. Everyone was advised to lock their doors and stay away from any windows. Everyone else was required to stay away from the area. The SWAT Team was not able to make contact with the male but successfully rescued the children from the apartment. After hours of no success with making contact nor the adult male giving himself up the SWAT Team entered the residence concerned about the adult’s welfare. The adult male was found unresponsive in a locked bathroom and announced deceased.

The young adult male was only 24 years old, a father, husband, son, grandson, cousin, and friend. He served the United States Army and reserves, putting his country’s needs before his own. Veteran or not, if you are struggling with your mental health and need someone to talk to dial or text 988. You will get help and resources that will give you hope for tomorrow.

If you are a vet there is also another great resource in Harvard Illinois called The Mustang Project. This program is supported by Bravehearts, a non-profit therapeutic riding facility in Harvard, IL for veterans. The Mustang project adopts mustangs stuck in holding pens all over the western United States and trains them to be used in their program. They offer clinics with top horsemen from across the world, drill team, polo, and horse shows. You not only connect with the horses, but you also connect with other veterans going through the same struggles and building a support team. The best part? It’s ALL FREE for veterans. They also offer therapeutic riding for non-veterans with disabilities at their facility in Poplar Grove, IL.
