Brush drop off at the public works department on Carey Street.
The public works department has been having issues with this and has been working on solutions. This has become a priority and is costing the residents tens of thousands a year needlessly. The brush drop-off is for citizens to drop off brush, but it has become a free-for-all. Other townships and municipalities are the main culprits. Most recently repairs of $6,000.00 due to a chunk of concrete that was dumped and buried in the pile causing major damage to the processor. Everything from dishwashers, refrigerators, construction debris, kitchen cabinets, and so much more has been found in the pile over the years. The brush pile is for brush only and when it is used as a free city dump it becomes costly.
The director of public works has looked at many scenarios on how this abuse can be prevented. Director of Public Works Tom Earle shared some changes that have been successful. As long as there are personnel at public works the drop-off is open with some monitoring including checking ID to make sure only Lake Geneva residents are using this service. Monitoring the drop-off has substantially reduced the number of inappropriate items coming into the pile. The department is struggling to keep it open at least part-time on the weekend and would like to offer extended hours in the off-season. This would include between spring and fall brush pick up.
The Public Works Department wants to accommodate the citizens and is determined to offer brush pick up and brush drop off to its residents, which not all municipalities do. Hiring someone part-time to man the brush drop-off has been unsuccessful. The parking manager offered assistance with the issue and has parking attendants looking for more hours, and this could solve the problem. Earle was appreciative of the offer and believes it could be a win-win for both departments and the people of the city. This is an issue that has been discussed at every public works meeting for at least a year and the committee is pleased with this solution. The brush drop-off will have signage when it is closed and anyone dumping during off hours or dumping inappropriate items could be issued a citation. The issue will go to the Finance, License, and Regulation committee, so any citizen who would like to weigh in on the topic there is still time at FLR.-
