SURPRISING STUFF

Bass is a fish, while Basso is a sometimes fishy builder around the Geneva Lake area.
Well, actually, Mr. Basso is not fishy, but we liked the sound of how that sentence worked to start this article. A conceptual review is underway of a proposed development by Basso Builders for property partially and currently located in the Town of Bloomfield. The property is near the Summerhaven neighborhood on the South end of Lake Geneva off Mobile Street.

Basso is looking to build six duplexes and two single-family homes. The homes are to be long-term rental properties that Basso hopes will relieve the lack of affordable housing and bring families to the city long-term. This is all in the discussion phase and the neighbors are already upset. They do not want to see any development in the area. The loss of trees and green space and increased traffic are the main concerns.

Another concern is the rent rate, and many do not believe the $2,000 estimated monthly rent for these units is affordable for the average family. Not everybody is opposed, some are in favor of more regular family housing even if it is at a rent rate higher than desired. Some believe the development could be a benefit due to schools needing increased enrollment and the city needing tax revenue.

Approval or not it is still a ways off. Public hearings will be scheduled every step of the way and the Summerhaven neighborhood is sure to be sharing concerns and opposition every step of the way.
