The Lake Geneva Avian Committee and the Geneva Lake Museum present Swift Night Out.
This event takes place on September 7th, Thursday, at the Geneva Lake Museum (5:00 p.m.). Everyone is invited to this wonderful annual event. The night will include food trucks, presentations, and of course the highlight of the Swifts. As more and more forests are cleared, and the Swifts’ natural habitat is lost, they have adapted, using chimneys instead of hollow trees.

The Swifts find a suitable chimney and return to it nightly after a long day of flying around to build a nest, rest, and lay eggs. This is a ritual that can be observed almost anywhere on any night. Lake Geneva is lucky to have the Avian Committee, and this is a very interesting and educational event for the community. Starting at 5 p.m., food trucks will be available, at 6 p.m. there will be an indoor presentation “Eagle and Friends” which will include an eagle and other raptors up close. After the presentation everyone will return outdoors to watch the chimney swifts enter the chimney to roost.

As the school year resumes safety is a top priority.
School buses are vital and will be out making their way through the neighborhoods. School buses are designed to be one of the safest vehicles on the road. Busses are made to be highly visible and include flashing lights, cross view mirrors, stop arms, protective seating, high crush standards, and roll over protection features. Less than one percent of all traffic fatalities involve students on school buses. However, children are more at risk when kids are getting on and off the bus. This makes it important for everyone to understand bus safety. When you see a bus slowing down or stopping you must be extra aware of not just the bus but also any kids around the area. Stop for all buses and do not attempt to pass. The yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop. Red flashing lights and the extended stop arm mean the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off the bus.

Do not proceed until the lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm is withdrawn. Children must be reminded of what to do before the bus arrives and what to do and what not to do when they are getting on and off the bus. Kids should arrive early at the bus stop and know where to stand while waiting for the bus to arrive. It is important to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop and the door opens before approaching the bus and wait for the driver to give the ok for standing and exiting the bus. Children should know that when crossing the street always wait at the curb for the driver to give the ok to cross and never walk behind the bus. Parents should also give the children a reminder of the importance of behavior on the bus and how crucial it can be for every one’s safety. Now that the school year is back in session drivers need to be aware of all safety measures and always be extra cautious and slow down near school buses.
